Art History is a highly regarded and ambitious subject. It is a lens for understanding how societies have seen the world and how they wish to be perceived. In a world of visual content, History of Art students develop the skills to deduce the meanings of images and explore parallels between cultures and periods of history. This analytical skill set lends itself to many other humanities subjects.
Taught by The Golden Circle’s Art History experts, our students develop a detailed understanding of artists, periods of history, and the value of art in shaping society. The nature of the subject allows students to engage independently in the historical, theoretical, and critical study of art. Therefore, where possible, we tailor the examples of paintings, sculptures and architecture to the particular interests of each student.
We encourage students to experience art first-hand by visiting art galleries and museums. Our Art History teachers have direct links with The Courtauld Institute of Art, Christie’s, Phillip’s and The National Gallery, and, where possible, offer lessons outside of the classroom, in front of the artwork being studied. Our students perform excellently in public exams and many continue to study Art History at universities including Oxford, Cambridge and St Andrews.
"Lucy is intelligent and eloquent, and understands the exam boards in great detail. She has been a great help to my daughter, who hadn’t learned how to structure an essay in all her years at school. With Lucy’s support she is now able to do this. She is warm, empathetic, and encouraging. I would recommend her without reservation."
