Classical Greek is a challenging but highly rewarding subject. The classical world of Ancient Greece is the bedrock of our civilisation today. The Greeks’ enquiries underpin the scientific subjects we study today, such as Maths and Physics, and their radical thinking has shaped centuries of politics and philosophy. The 19th century celebrated historian, George Grote, made his name advocating for universal suffrage, a belief he developed through his thinking on Ancient Greece. Karl Max’s ideas on historical materialism were rooted in the work of ancient atomist Democritus, and the suffragettes recited the great speech from Euripides’s Medea in their fight for the right to vote.

Our expert Classics teachers guide students through Greek language and literature, with a focus on the literary, cultural, philosophical and historical issues which arise from prescribed texts. We equip students with the vocabulary, grammar and linguistic skills to translate texts and maturely debate issues arising in literature. At The Golden Circle, we firmly believe the study of Greek is important as a way of developing a sensitive and reasoned approach to language and promoting our students’ wider awareness of the thoughts and ideas that have shaped their world.

We teach Classical Greek students from primary age to university level. Our approach combines an academically rigorous approach to grammar, syntax and vocabulary, with a lively, light-hearted teaching style. Our younger students develop a love of the subject through Greek mythology and story-telling. Our GCSE and A Level students enjoy practicing their translation, composition, and comprehension skills, with the one-to-one support of an experienced teacher.

We have extensive experience preparing students for Common Entrance and scholarship exams, GCSE and A Level exams, and university admissions tests, such as the Oxbridge CAT (Classics Admissions Test). With the expertise of our Classics team, Golden Circle students become talented linguists, achieving academic scholarships, top grades at GCSE and A Level, and places on competitive Classics undergraduate courses.

"My daughter couldn’t speak highly enough of Lucy. She has not only made remarkable progress with her guidance but also enjoyed the sessions enormously. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending her to any other students."

"My son is at Cambridge as we speak and has his interviews this afternoon and tomorrow morning. The last-minute session with Freddie has been a real confidence boost and I can say with certainty that he has really benefited from Freddie’s coaching and support over the last two years."
