Latin is a highly respected part of British education and revered by schools, universities, and employers. It is a subject that provides intellectually demanding training and values attention to detail. Alongside learning linguistics, students explore historical, philosophical, and literary ideas, making connections between Ancient Rome and the modern world. They enjoy reading prose and verse texts written by famous Roman authors such as Virgil, Ovid, Cicero, Horace, Catullus and Tacitus. Through these texts, students become immersed in the beliefs, politics, and rules which shaped Roman society.

The Golden Circle has an internationally renowned team of qualified Latin teachers. Many teach, or have taught, at prestigious UK schools and bring extensive teaching experience and an enthusiasm for their own specialisms to the study of Latin. Through bespoke one-to-one tutorials, our students learn the complex grammar, vocabulary and analytical approach to become successful classicists and Latin scholars.

The Golden Circle helps students to gain places and win scholarships at schools such as Eton College, Winchester College and St Paul’s Girls’ School, and achieve places at top institutions such as Oxford University and Cambridge University. For scholarship preparation, such as the King’s Scholarship or Winchester Election, we pair students with teachers who have an excellent understanding of the school’s admissions and examination process. At university level, we match Classics applicants with teachers who attended the institution and can offer a unique insight into university life.

Our Latin services include one-to-one tuition, residential tuition, mock interviews and exam preparation. This includes preparation for the Oxford University CAT (Classics Admissions Test). With our guidance and support, Golden Circle students achieve academic scholarships, top grades at GCSE and A Level, and places on competitive Classics undergraduate courses.

"Thanks to Meredith’s excellent tuition and encouragement, our daughter has just received an A* grade in her Latin A Level. She initially struggled with the step up in Latin, from GCSE to A Level but, over the two years, Meredith has so ably assisted in her subject. She can now realise her dream of studying Classics at university."

Mother of a Latin A Level student

"David was such a terrific tutor for my son. The Latin CAT is incredibly difficult, but my son remained calm and applied the skills and methodical approach that he had learned in David’s sessions. I am enormously grateful for the insight David offered into Oxford’s admissions process."

Parent of a 17 year old

"Freddie is an incredibly competent Latin teacher and knew exactly how to keep my son engaged in lessons but was also able to be firm when it was necessary to pull the reins. His Latin vocabulary and translation skills improved considerably and he went into the exam feeling confident."
