Film is a form of art. Film Studies students have a love for the medium coupled with a desire to explore texts beyond mainstream Hollywood productions. They explore documentary, television, video and digital video – including streaming services such as Netflix – and, at The Golden Circle, are taught by inspiring, qualified teachers with experience of the A Level curriculum. Through structured, academically rigorous lessons, our Film students are trained in critical, theoretical, and historical thinking and analysis.
Our teaching includes discussions, film clips, essay planning and exam technique practice. Our approach leads to a broad knowledge of cinema, the societies and people that create them, and the technologies they use. Film students develop the critical tools to reveal their meaning and articulate their ideas concisely. We teach students the art of essay writing, from planning, to developing ideas and using quotes or evidence appropriately.
Practical work is an important part of the Film Studies course. We offer students the opportunity to explore creative practice in digital video and sound, including the use of professional cameras, audio equipment and editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro. We encourage students to explore Film outside of lessons and offer advice on careers in the film industry, media and communications, the arts and related professions.
Our expert teachers have a passion for Film Studies. In addition to teaching, our teachers lead Film Societies, are actively involved in projects at the British Film Institute, and hold PhDs in Film Studies. This leads to success in A Level exams and higher education.

Mother of an A Level Film Studies student
"As we approach the end of exams, I just wanted to thank Ruaraidh for his unwavering support and dedication over the last 12 months. My daughter was so inspired by his lessons and something just ‘clicked’. After many years of struggling to structure an essay, Ruaraidh’s lessons taught her this important skill and unlocked a love of creative writing. We have seen improvements in her exam results and her confidence. I know this skill set will set her up for university and beyond. We are so grateful."
Parent of a Year 13 student
